The highly anticipated Apple event lived up to expectations with two new iPhones, the Apple Watch and the company’s move into the mobile payment space, called Apple Pay, all being unveiled during the exciting two-hour event.
Here, we look at some of the key features of the new iPhone.
1. Continuous, seamless design
There are no distinct edges. The cover glass curves around the sides
2. Biggest and thinnest iPhones ever
The rumours that have being doing the rounds were confirmed last night. iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display and the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch display. Both panels are described as “Retina HD”
This represents the biggest screen size boost in iPhone history. The new phones have a screen resolution of 1334 x 750 and 1920 x 1080, respectively.
At the same time, these are also the thinnest iPhones ever: they’ll be 6.9mm and 7.1mm thick, respectively, compared to 7.6mm for the iPhone 5S.
3. Most powerful and power-efficient iPhone yet
The phones use a brand new, Apple-designed processor called the A8. According to Apple, this has up to 25% faster processing power and up to 50% faster graphics.
The new phones have better battery-life. You can talk on the phone for 14 hours on the iPhone 6 and a whopping 24 hours with the iPhone 6 Plus, compared to just 10 hours for the previous iPhone.
4. Better pictures and videos
While the key specs haven’t changed, the new phones come with a new sensor that allows the camera to auto-focus twice as fast as the previous models.
Burst Selfie Mode
Keeping in line with the ‘selfie’ trend, Apple has added a Burst Selfie Mode on the new 2.1 megapixel front camera, which takes 10 photos per second!
You will also be able to shoot amazing slow-motion videos with the new iPhones – you can take videos at 240 frames per second.
5. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus come with iOS 8
The new iOS allows seamless integration of Mac and iPhones. A new QuickType keyboard learns your conversation style and helps you answer accordingly.
One of the most highlighted features, the “Health” and “Healthkit” gathers data from the user’s previous fitness trackers and gadgets – “with your permission” – and then put all the stats in a single interface for a much easier viewing.
September 17 has been confirmed as the release date for iOS 8. All devices from the iPhone 4S upward will be compatible with it.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be available in India from October 17, 2014. The prices are yet to be confirmed. We will update you as soon as they come out.
