Choose a back-up method
If you want an automatic backup solution, use iCloud to back up your data. This means you can restore content to your device from almost anywhere using Wi-Fi. If you don’t connect your device to a Mac or PC very often, or you don’t own a Mac or PC then this is best approach.
If you frequently use the computer that hosts your backups use iTunes to back-up your data. This is also the best approach if you don’t have an iCloud account or don’t want to use iCloud or you’d like to have a manual or secondary backup to use with your iCloud back up.
Backup using iCloud
If you’re using iCloud, it can automatically back up your content. Here are the steps to turn on iCloud Backup:
- Tap Settings > iCloud > Backup. If you’re using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
- Tap iCloud Backup to activate it.
- Tap Back-up Now.
Once this is done, iCloud will start backing up your content automatically. Just return to this screen to see when the last backup happened.
Backup using iTunes
Here are the steps to back-up your data on to iTunes on your computer:
- Ensure that the latest version of iTunes is installed on your computer.
- Connect your device to your computer.
- Select File > Devices > Back up.
iTunes back-up can also be done by syncing your device with your computer. When you use iTunes to sync, backing up is the first step.
To check if the backup was successful, open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. You should see the name of your device and the date and time at which iTunes created the backup.
